9th Hole

Situated in the Cairngorms National Park, the course measures 5710 yards, with a par of 70 and Standard Scratch Score of 68. Though not long, it presents a fair challenge for every calibre of golfer. It is naturally split into three distinct sections - Holes 1 to 6 are played over flat parkland, holes 7 to 12 through moderately hilly woodland, whilst holes 13 to 18 reverts to undulating parkland.
The "signature" hole of the course is Murdie's View, the 275 yard 9th, a short downhill par 4 with the spectacular backdrop of pine trees and the Cromdale Hills, pictured above. When the heather is in bloom on the Cromdales the view is incomparable. Elsewhere on the course, magnificent views of the Cairngorm range may be observed.Wildlife abounds, and whilst rabbits are kept at bay, roe deer and hare may be seen along with a variety of birds such as peewit, oyster catcher and buzzard.
The course record of 60 was set in 1984, by six times winner of the Club Championship, George Bain a life long member of the club. George, who was 26 years old at the time, was playing the first round of the Championship. The round included eight birdies and an eagle 2 at the 380 yard 7th. The record stood for 23 years until Duncan Stewart matched the figure in July 2007, courtesy of six birdies and two eagles including a two at the par 4 18th hole. Ironically, Duncan was only three weeks old when George shot the original record.

Hole

1. Short par 4 is an ideal opening hole. Play for the Scots pine tree on the left hand side of the green. This line avoids the large gathering bunker on the rightside of the fairway. The long hitters can play for the green avoiding the two greenside bunkers.

2. Although this is one of the widest fairways on the course be aware of out of bounds all the way down the hole on the left. An island bunker awaits the slice to the right. The shot to the green :- do not overclub as a ditch runs along behind the green and the back of the green slopes down slightly.

3. The perfect line for the tree shot here is just right of the ditch. The second shot coming into the green, which slopes right to left is guarded by a bunker on the top side.

4. A short par 4 with a wide fairway, should be looking for a birdie here. The island bunker on the right which is shared with the previous hole is unique feature of this part of the course.

5. Very good par 4 into the prevailing wind. Be careful not to overclub with the shot to the green as the roadway fence is very close behind the green.

6. Longest hole on course but reachable in two for the longer hitters. Out of bounds down the right hand side needs to be avoided but plenty of room on the left.

7. This is one of the best holes on the course, a good drive over the hill to the right of the direction post gives a level stance for the second shot. The green is very long, make sure you club yourself to the back of the green to avoid the front buniker.

8. The first hole measuring 161 yards from the medal tee. As this hole is played uphill to a saucer green a strong club is advised. The bold player is not punished.

9. A short par 4 played downhill. One of the most photographed holes in Scotland. A very inviting tee shot, and a birdie opportunity after a good drive.

10. To hit the fairway is a must at this hole to give yourself any chance of making a par 4. A great golf hole without a bunker.

11. 191 yards short hole played uphill. Take plenty club here as the hole always plays longer than it appears. A large green is guarded by bunkers on either side.

12. Stroke index 1.
A good driving hole with a generous fairway. Second shot played over the hill to a large green. A bunker on the right guards the green and a steep bank falls away to the left hand side of the green to be avoided.

13. A short par 4. Straight forward tee shot with trees and out of bounds on the left. Suggest a chip and run second shot played from the hollow in front of green.

14. Usually after a good drive the player is confronted with a hanging lie for their second shot played to a two tier green. The safe shot is played short of the right hand bunker beside the green and the will kick left onto the green.

15. Short par 4 with out of bounds on the right. For the long hitter going for the green a bunker awaits the shot just short of the putting surface.

16. Shortest hole on the course surrounded by bunkers. A high shot is required to have any chance of holding the green. However there is a narrow entrance for the low shot landing between the two front bunkers.

17. Must be careful with the tee shot to avoid out of bound on the right hand side. The second shot is played to a plateau green. The long hitter should be able to get close to the green with the tee shot.

18. A strong drive is required if the ball is to stay to the top of the hill which affords the player of view of the green for the second shot, otherwise the ball will roll back off the slope leaving a blind shot to the green.
